Maple Street on a First Friday runs on muscle memory. You know the drill by now. Park a few blocks off the strip, grab something to eat, drift toward wherever the music is loudest, end the night on somebody's patio.

What most residents miss is that the six blocks around 62nd and Maple aren't running one event a month. They're running a rotating programming grid across the same handful of anchor venues, and once you can read the grid, you stop needing to check anyone's Instagram before you leave the house.

The anchors don't change. The programming does.

Since 2012, Benson First Friday has brought the neighborhood together for more than 170 First Fridays, featuring an estimated 1,000+ individual exhibitions, performances, pop-ups, markets, and workshops. That's the important number. It means the venues you already walk past every week are the ones doing the programming, and they've had over a decade to figure out what works.

Benson First Friday is Omaha's monthly art walk in the Benson Creative District. On the first Friday of every month, you can explore gallery openings, art exhibitions, live performances, artist markets, and community events throughout the neighborhood. Once you know which anchor holds which slot, the whole night gets easier to plan around.

Here's the working map for a summer First Friday, addresses and all:

• BFF Summer Artist Markets at Military & Maple and 62nd & Maple, 6:00 to 10:00 PM, a rotating lineup of makers selling handmade goods, original artwork, prints, and one-of-a-kind finds. This is your first stop if you want to actually shop.
• PETFEST at Petshop Gallery, 2725 N. 62nd Street. PETFEST takes over the Petshop backlot all summer long with live music every First Friday, 6:00 to 10:00, free. Four bands, roughly one per hour.
• Ted & Wally's, hosting the TILT23 Showcase from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Ice cream and a rotating cast of performers, usually the calmer end of the night.
• Ming Toy Gallery at 6066 Maple and BFF Gallery at 5901 Maple for the gallery openings themselves, both running the same 6:00 to 10:00 window.

The Benson Creative District centers around 6200 Maple Street, so everything above is genuinely walkable from a single parking spot. That's the thesis of the neighborhood, honestly. Nothing on that list is more than four blocks from anything else on that list.

What's actually different this summer

The venues repeat. The lineups don't. If you skipped June because you assumed it would look like May, you missed a specific night that will not run again.

June was Pride month, which in Benson means something particular. Benson First Friday has been a welcoming, LGBTQIA+-affirming space since its inception in 2012, and over time the June edition organically grew into what is now known as First Friday PRIDE, intentionally centering queer artists, performers, and community voices across the district. June also happened to be BFF Omaha's birthday month: 14 years of building community through arts engagement.

July's PETFEST lineup at Petshop was Dirty Talker at 7:00, Little Rooms at 8:00, Problems at 9:00. If you were on the patio at Benson Brewery for dinner and heard bass through the wall, that's what it was.

August is the one to actually block on the calendar. Founded in 2013, the New American Arts Festival takes place during August First Friday and was created to connect Omaha's immigrant and refugee communities with the broader cultural life of their new home, celebrating the arts and cultures of Syrian, Karen, Nepali, Afghan, Mexican, Rwandan, Burundian, Sudanese, Thai, and other New American artists. NAAF provides paid opportunities for artists to showcase their work while building professional and economic skills through exhibitions, performances, and on-street artisan markets. This year is the 13th annual. It's the single busiest First Friday of the year in Benson, and it earns it.

Where to eat before you walk

The stretch of Maple between 60th and 63rd has changed enough in the last few years that a five-year Benson resident can genuinely be out of date. Here's what's actually on the block right now.

Little Riot is the newest addition and the one most likely to catch you off guard if you haven't been out in a few months. It officially opened in October in Benson, they serve wood-fire pizzas, and they have a rooftop patio. The menu leans wood-fired pizza with a twist, mixing classic pies and global mashups like Nashville Hot Chicken and Crab Rangoon. Rooftop is the operative word. There is not another rooftop patio on Maple.

Yoshitomo and Au Courant are the two names that put Benson on the national map. Both were named semifinalists for the James Beard Award in 2020. If you have out-of-town guests and you want them to understand the neighborhood in one meal, this is where you go. Reservations, obviously.

Virtuoso Pizzeria for New York-style. The pies are New York-style and perfectly charred, and the slices are the size of your face. Genuinely the fastest food you can get and still eat well before the 6:00 gallery openings.

Jojo's Diner for weekend brunch or a low-key lunch. It's a modern take on the traditional diners of midcentury America, serving diner-style delicacies like country-fried steak and chicken and waffles, open for breakfast and lunch at the Benson location.

Benson Brewery at 6059 Maple is the standard-issue First Friday hub for a reason. House favorites like Hazy Hare, a New England IPA, and College Ale, a crisp American ale, anchor the menu, while seasonal brews from bourbon barrel-aged stouts to honey kölsch keep things interesting. If you plan to make a full night of it, this is the sit-down anchor.

A resident's shortcut

Here's the practical version of everything above, if you want to keep it in one place.

If it's the first Friday of the month and you don't feel like doing homework: park near 62nd and Maple around 5:45, walk to Little Riot or Virtuoso for a quick bite, hit the Artist Market at Military & Maple by 6:30, drift to Petshop Gallery for whoever's on stage at 7:00, and end at Benson Brewery or Ted & Wally's depending on your mood.

If it's June, you're in Pride month. If it's August, clear your schedule for the New American Arts Festival. If it's any other month, the grid still holds.

The reason this works is structural. You can decide at 5:00 that you want to go out at 6:00 and still have a real night.

That is not something most Omaha neighborhoods can say about themselves. It's worth appreciating from inside.
